Artist's Statement

My inspiration usually derives from an abundance of archaeological finds and parchmarks left by settlements long since forgotten.

Reflecting the transient nature of such a past, I aim to create an elusive, fragile quality in my work reminiscent of fragments of decaying textiles. Using the traditional method of papermaking, I create delicate images of ancient artefacts embedded in hand-made paper and muslin.

Birds and beasts inspired from Anglo-Saxon crosses and the elaborately carved Franks Casket are engraved and screen printed on hand-made papers.

Richly coloured wall hangings based upon ancient settlements capture the memory of a history now barely visible within the landscape. The work interprets the frail remains of specific archaeological sites within Cumbria and Northumbria giving a transient glimpse into the past.

Residencies and Workshops

I undertake workshops and residencies for people of all ages in printmaking, papermaking and banner making.

I work in nurseries, schools and colleges as well as doing workshops in museums and galleries often connected to a current exhibition.
